I see more of a gospel vibe in the late 80's shows: I Shall be Released, That Lucky old Sun, etc. Perhaps the blues tunes with the female backup singers qualify? I could burn a super disk with those criteria.

Roadrunner 11-4-81
Valerie 11-9-82
It's no Use 12-3-83 (very gospel sounding)
How Sweet it is (too many good dates but 12-3-83 is also good)
Love in the Afternoon 6-16-82

I could go on forever

Yeah you're right so I am sort of torn. I was thinking of:
Ride Mighty High
Sisters and Brothers
Who Was John
Strange Man

I felt just Melvin's heavily gospel influenced style and the two women back-up singers brought an immediate gospel feel to all of the material being covered as soon as they joined the group. As the years past it became more prominent in the sound of the group and they started to cover more genuine gospel material.I personally did not enjoy the back-up singers transforming Tangled Up into a Sunday go to meeting shouter and found their presence to be annoying. When I started to go see the JGB it was about getting to hear Jerry on his own,no Bob or later Brent, just Jer singing and playing with a quiet backing unit and then it changed to what it became and lost the original flash it had for me.

Yeah, you have a point, it doesn't always work. It's a sound I happen to like a lot but it doesn't necessarily work on every song and I agree it doesn't work on some of those songs. As I say I like the sound so I am happy to hear them but I can see it wouldn't be everyone's cup of tea.

Yeah Ring,I wasn't saying the post 81' stuff wasn't good ,it just gradually got less interesting for me.Outside of the line-up from 10/79'-6/81' I enjoyed some of the early 71'-73' Jerry/Saunders material and liked the Legion of Mary's take on the Dylan tunes they covered, but for the most part found the bulk of both bands catalogs to be mediocre to unlistenable, being subjected to Merl's voice was just inexcusable. While being very talented I found Nicky Hopkins to be a bad fit for Jerry,as he had a very out front style and to my mind a more "blend in" type of keyboardist, such as Keith is a better fit for Jerry's style of playing, once again not saying the music wasn't good.As for the line-ups with Keith I found the music to be just about right,a little to laid back at times with not much happening, but on the whole they produced some really fine music.

Oh, that's interesting. I think I like a more "out front" keyboard possibly because it's the only instrument I play, so it's the only instrument I understand. Not sure if that makes sense but I think it's why I don't mind dominating keyboards.
